MUSC Children’s Hospital opened and dedicated their new chapel in loving memory of Christina Joyce Akabidavis, a mother who lost her life in a tragic road accident on May 12, 2008 with one of her twin girls. The ceremony was attended by family and friends, members of the MUSC family and the Charleston, SC community of which Christina was a very active member.
The chapel was designed through the inspiration of Christina’s birthplace, Sierra Leone. The flag of Sierra Leone is divided into three horizontal bars in three colors; green, white and blue reflecting natural resources, unity and justice, and the emblem of hope that peace will be restored. The chapel has been designed with these three colors and themes in mind. It is divided into three spaces for families and visitors; one for the mind and resources, one for the body and unity and one for spirit and hope. The chapel was made possible by Philoptochos, Helen Flynn/Donaldson Trust and MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund
