Dr. Megan Baker Rupell,
Medical Director of MUSC’s Comprehensive Breast Care Program
Breast cancer care at its best requires a tremendous, well-choreographed and compassionate team effort. Every patient diagnosed with breast cancer deserves the benefit of not just one clinician’s opinion, but the opinion of an entire breast care team with hundreds of years of combined breast cancer-specific expertise. But how is this truly accomplished?
The multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to breast cancer care at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Care Program means that often in just one day—and under one roof—breast cancer patients are given individualized attention from a team of cancer specialists, all while remaining comfortably in their exam room. Too many patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer can attest to the anxiety and distress surrounding the unknown, and the frustration of having to travel from one doctor’s office to the next. At Hollings Cancer Center, the team strives to alleviate those concerns as quickly as possible. All aspects of a patient’s case and diagnosis are reviewed by the team prior to their arrival at Hollings. This allows them to be prepared to consult with the patient and their family, all in one day. Should the patient need additional procedures or consultations, Hollings is equipped to accommodate that need in real time the day of her appointment.
While each breast cancer patient’s experience at Hollings will be unique, most will include an evaluation by a breast surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist—all while being guided through the process by their breast cancer nurse navigator. When needed or requested, a patient may also visit with other cancer specialists, including an MUSC:
• radiologist (if additional breast imaging procedures are needed, they are commonly completed that same day)
• clinical trials nurse
• genetics counselor
• plastic and reconstructive surgeon
• physical therapist
• oncology dietician
It is our goal and mission to conduct a thorough evaluation, provide important education, and recommend a treatment plan at the conclusion of the day. The visit may be a little longer, but the information could be lifesaving. We strive to efficiently educate and empower women to make the treatment decision that is right for them. We view our role as both an awesome privilege and obligation as South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center. The Comprehensive Breast Care team at Hollings Cancer Center is ready to rally around you.
